Our resident John at Silverpoint Court Residential Care Home worked on the Tilbury Docks for ten years and was interested to know the dock’s full history, since its construction in 1886.
From World War One and Gunther Pluschow, the German prisoner of war who escaped from Britain to Germany by reaching Tilbury Docks and hiding on a Dutch steamer, to the ‘Ten Pound Poms’ and the arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948 – so many fascinating stories!
John thoroughly enjoyed an hour of nostalgia, reading about the dock’s legacy and looking through historical photographs.
